Leashing Your Puppy

When you bring a new puppy home and need to place a leash and collar on for the first time, take it step by step.

First, place the collar on the puppy and let him wear it around for a while. Do not leave the puppy unattended in a crate or at home alone with the collar on, as he may catch it on something and harm himself. After a day passes, and he has quit scratching at the collar or shaking his head, you are ready for the leash.

Attach the leash and let the puppy drag it around with him before you try to take him for a walk. He needs to the feel the weight attached to the leash. Once it does not bother him, pick up the leash and try to coax the puppy towards you while keeping the leash loose. Some puppies will sit down and resist the leash if it is being pulled, so try to let the puppy do it on his own. If you need to use a treat to coax the puppy into motion, use one. If the puppy tries to play with the leash, discourage that by taking it out of his mouth and verbally telling him to leave it. As he drops it from his mouth, praise him.

Remember, new puppies have never worn around collars or been leashed before, and are not used to being guided or controlled by someone. Give them some time to get used to it. Be gentle, but firm, and encourage him to walk around by himself while you guide him. As he stands up and walks around on his own, even for only a minute, praise the puppy and let him know he has done a good job. If he thinks you are happy with his behavior, he will be more likely to attempt it again.

Be a positive leader and a responsible dog owner. Unless you have been through off leash training and your dog is reliable 100% of the time, your dog should NEVER be off leash. All puppies fit into the “NEVER” category. Good luck and keep them safe!
